We are proud to announce that one of our partners at DreamDirt has achieved his CAI designation this month. Jason Dvorak, CAI Madrid Iowa recently completed his coursework and was awarded his certificate from the National Auctioneers Association at Indiana University in Bloomington, Indiana. For many that just read that, if you are not involved or familiar with the auction industry I want to take some time to show you why that’s such an impressive feat and valuable addition to our company when you are searching for a trusted farmland sales advisor.
First I want to say that I am writing this for people that don’t have inside industry knowledge, for those that may be choosing an auctioneer or just learning more about the auction industry. You have heard the saying “they don’t make ’em like they used to” is true of auctioneers but probably different than the statement is meant to be used. While it is typically used to describe something where quality has declined the opposite is true of modern auctioneers. Today’s modern auctioneers are striving to achieve the highest levels of professionalism through higher education opportunities among other things. Today’s modern auctioneers are not the stereotypical cowboy hat wearing fast talkin’ person you might be used to in your mind. Today’s auctioneers have tools that give us the opportunity to have advanced well above other marketing methods and a top-level auctioneer today will be extremely tech-savvy, highly educated, well adjusted professional you can rely on for more than superficial information. Today modern auctioneers often have a depth of knowledge that is very valuable to their niche’s clients.
Many years ago when I founded DreamDirt my vision was that the people I worked with would be among many things highly educated and not just any education, but education that applied and could serve a distinct purpose for our clients. Education that would bring an uncommon depth of knowledge and set us apart from those in the same business by providing the best guidance and decision making to our client’s sales and in the end more money in their pockets with no hassles in the closing process as well as reduced exposure to liability.
The Certified Auctioneers Institute is somewhat hard to explain to people outside of the auction industry because it’s an uncommon training program type and it is drawn out over 3 sessions in a 24 month period. Auctioneers entering the program must be able to pass the National Auctioneers Association screening process and provide adequate industry references to be accepted. Upon acceptance students are brought to the Indiana University campus at Bloomington Indiana for a week each March for 3 consecutive March’s (24 months total) During this week students listen to lectures by industry leaders, participate in classroom exercises, group projects and prepare individual level projects such as auction proposals and eventually the program will culminate in each student creating a business plan for their business.
The National Auctioneers Association describes CAI as “The three-year CAI designation program provides auction professionals the opportunity to earn the auction industry’s most respected professional designation. CAI is an intensive, executive development program offering professional auctioneers instruction and coursework in business management, ethics, communication, finance, strategic planning and marketing.”
During the time at CAI, auctioneers get the opportunity to network and become friends with auctioneers and instructors from all over the United States. The networking exposes them to new ideas, new techniques and helps them broaden their view and understanding of the auction industry.
Having completed the Certified Auctioneers Institute myself I saw that the CAI educated auctioneer coupled with the right tools, resources, network and the team back at his or her company could and would represent a very valuable asset for our clients. I insisted that all of our management level auctioneers attend and complete the Certified Auctioneers Institute. This is a big financial commitment for our company and a nearly unheard of standard nationwide. In fact, the number of auctioneers that hold the designation itself is less than 1% of auctioneers nationwide, at last count, there were only 900 to 1000 CAI auctioneers in the United States. Today there are only 11 CAI auctioneers in Iowa out of an estimated 500 auctioneers! The number of auctioneers in the United States has been estimated to be between 80,000 and 125,000 total auctioneers.
At DreamDirt we take pride in providing a very valuable service to our clients and our customers. Selling million and multi-million dollar assets deserves our professional attention and the dedication our staff has shown in committing to the highest standards is evidence of that professional attention. In 2019 DreamDirt Partner / Auctioneer Tom Bradley who is 2/3rds finished with the CAI program will become our 3rd CAI auctioneer at DreamDirt.
