DreamDirt Farm and Ranch Real Estate, LLC and Farmland Agent, Rachel Hoy, are more than excited to offer a $1,250 scholarship to a high school senior pursuing a career in the agriculture industry. This scholarship is in memory of Marilyn K. Hoy, who sadly lost her battle to breast cancer in 2010, and is the late mother of Rachel Hoy.

“I lost my mother, Marilyn Hoy, when I was just 14 years old. She battled breast cancer my entire life. In my short time with her, she instilled in me a love of agriculture that remains my passion today. Being born and raised on a farm outside of Dexter, IA, she shared her experiences growing up as a farm girl and her love for taking care of livestock with me. My mom had a special fondness for pigs and I can recall many stories about her helping my dad raise them when I was only a few years old. It was always evident how much she enjoyed caring for the baby piglets.

At times, when she was hospitalized, my dad had to continue to work. Luckily for me, this meant spending time at my grandparents farm riding around in tractors and helping with chores which continued to ignite my love for farming. Even at a young age, it was clear to my mom how much agriculture meant to me. She elected to enroll me in 4-H and always helped me with my projects. I knew even at that age what she was doing for me would shape the person I am today. From picking me up from school with the truck and trailer with our pony in the back for riding lessons, to making a “Just Keep Swimming” Relay For Life Team, and countless other projects in-between, the time spent working on my projects with her will never be forgotten. Near the end of her life on earth, health failing, she refused to miss a county fair where my little sister and I would show. I even pushed her in a wheelchair so she could still watch us exhibit our projects. We didn’t know then, but it would be the last summer we’d all spend ringside together.

Losing her was devastating. I was just starting high school and had to rely on friends, family and even people I did not know to get me through. I’ve never forgotten the warmth of their kindness and stories they shared with me about my mothers strong-will. Thankfully, it didn’t take me long to realize she would want me to keep succeeding and achieving my goals in life. I’m often reminded of her go-getter attitude and determination which pushes me to be the best I can be! My mother was a strong and courageous woman who helped anybody she could. There were many times I drove her to chemotherapy treatments, through Des Moines traffic, with simply a learner's permit. Truthfully, I was amazed at how she could start a conversation so effortlessly with fellow patients and made their day better by simply listening to them, and ultimately making them smile!

Her generosity was indisputable, and I am proud to share her spirit while celebrating her life with this scholarship to agricultural majors that have experienced the same hardship of battling breast cancer with a loved one. “  -Rachel Hoy
