History: Henry County, located in southeastern Iowa, has a vibrant history shaped by Native American presence, European settlement, and economic evolution. The area was initially inhabited by Native American tribes, including the Sauk and Meskwaki. European-American settlers arrived in the 1830s, and the county was officially established on December 7, 1836, named after the American Revolutionary War patriot Patrick Henry. The region’s growth was influenced by agriculture, and the arrival of railroads in the mid-19th century further facilitated economic development. Henry County played a role in the Underground Railroad, aiding escaped slaves on their journey to freedom. The county seat, Mount Pleasant, is home to historic sites reflecting the area’s abolitionist history. Agriculture, particularly corn and soybean farming, has remained vital to the local economy. Henry County’s rich heritage is showcased in its museums, events, and preserved landmarks, offering a glimpse into the past while adapting to the demands of the present.
