History:
Howard County, located in northeastern Iowa, has a history marked by Native American presence, pioneer settlement, and agricultural development. Initially inhabited by Native American tribes such as the Dakota Sioux and Winnebago, European-American settlers began arriving in the mid-19th century. Howard County was officially established on January 15, 1851, and it was named after Tilghman Howard, a U.S. Representative from Indiana.
The fertile land in the county attracted pioneers, leading to the establishment of farms and communities. Agriculture has been a central element of the local economy, with crops like corn and soybeans playing a significant role.
Cresco, the county seat, became a hub for commerce and community activities. The county’s growth was influenced by transportation developments, including the construction of railroads that facilitated trade and connectivity.
