History: Monona County was formed in 1851. It was perhaps named for the Indian word meaning “beautiful valley.” Farmland prices in Monona County can vary greatly. There is a great deal of investor ownership of farmland in Monona County and the value of your farm can rely very heavily on soil type.

Monona County has 2 vastly different farmland ecosystems.  On the western side is the Missouri River bottoms of mostly flat tillable farmland intermixed with oxbows from historic changes in the Missouri River to the eastern 3/4 of the county being Loess Hills.  There is significant investor activity in Monona County and a lower number of farmers than many counties to the north or south.  Monona County is similar to Harrison and Woodbury but the farthest from any metropolitan area.  Monona County is also known in the deer hunting world as a first class destination.  As a result many out of area absentee owners own land in Monona County and are a significant buying force for land here.
