History:

Pottawattamie County was established on February 24, 1847, and it is named after the Potawatomi Native American tribe. The region became part of the United States through the Louisiana Purchase in 1803.

Council Bluffs, the largest city and county seat, played a significant role in the westward expansion of the United States. It served as a major departure point for westward-bound pioneers during the 19th century. The city’s name is derived from a meeting between Lewis and Clark and a council of Native American tribes in 1804.

Pottawattamie County has a rich agricultural history, with farming and livestock playing crucial roles in its economy. Over the years, the county has experienced growth and development, becoming an integral part of Iowa’s history and culture.
