Buena Vista County History

Buena Vista County was formed on January 15, 1851 from open land. It was named in memory of the Battle of Buena Vista in the Mexican-American War.  Storm Lake is the county seat and the area to the west and south of Storm Lake is often referred to as “the Breadbasket of Iowa” and is very notable for its high quality soils.  Many if not most farms in this area have weighted average CSR ratings over 90 and always sell for a premium.  Land north of Storm Lake to the Spencer area is highly sought by area farmers looking to add acres to their farms.  Buena Vista County farmland is very high quality and therefore brings some of the highest prices in Iowa. Selling or buying farmland in this area with a competitive rental market provides excellent outcomes for sellers or investors.  We recommend selling land by auction because it provides the most benefit and the highest prices.
