The county officially organized in 1844, experiencing growth propelled by the development of railroads. Agriculture, particularly corn and soybean production, has been a steadfast pillar of the local economy. The late 19th and early 20th centuries witnessed the rise of coal mining as a significant industry. Today, Keokuk County preserves its cultural heritage through community events and landmarks, with towns like Sigourney serving as historical hubs. While facing economic challenges in the modern era, the county remains a testament to the enduring spirit of rural communities adapting to change.
