History:

Tama County has a rich history that dates back to its establishment in 1843. The county was named after Taimah, a Meskwaki Indian leader. In its early years, Tama County saw the arrival of pioneers and settlers who were attracted by the fertile land and the resources provided by the Iowa River.

Agriculture quickly became a cornerstone of Tama County’s economy, with farmers cultivating the land and contributing to the county’s prosperity. The county seat, Toledo, emerged as a central hub for administrative and community activities.
