Taylor County, Iowa was established on January 15, 1847, and it is named after General Zachary Taylor, who later became the 12th President of the United States. The county seat of Taylor County is Bedford.

As with many other counties in Iowa, Taylor County’s early history is closely tied to agriculture. The fertile land attracted settlers who established farms, and agriculture has been a significant part of the county’s economy.

One notable feature of Taylor County is its role in the development of the American Standardbred horse. The town of Bedford was the birthplace of the famous trotting horse, Dan Patch, who became a legendary figure in harness racing during the early 20th century.

Over the years, Taylor County has experienced changes and developments, contributing to the broader history of Iowa. The county’s communities have played a role in shaping its cultural heritage, and like other Iowa counties, it reflects the state’s agricultural roots.
